To demonstrate a novel combination of electric heat pump, aerotherm, and concrete solar collector integrated with low temperature water storage, to supply 100% (of which 50% from solar energy) of the space heating requirements of a group of 48 single family houses. Energy savings compared with a conventional boiler are estimated to be 25 TOE per year giving a payback of 10 years. Results from this project will lead to the design of a standard off the shelf package.
The first interim report of 15.09.87 shows that the installation is functioning according to the expectation of the contractor. The global cop of the system varies according to the different operating modes and is 2.60 when working with the water from the storage tank and 2.50 when using the ventilator. The energy fractions of the different energy sources are estimated to be 45% environmental, 19% electricity and 36% gas.
The innovative character of this project lies in the overall system design which combines various elements, themselves incorporating novel features. The first of these elements is a concrete solar collector constructed over a low temperature water store. The total storage volume is 480 m3 and collector surface area, 480 m2.
The concrete contains a special additive rendering it impermeable to water thereby avoiding heat losses due to the evaporation of water which would be absorbed in the structure's interstices. The collector also slopes slightly so that in freezing conditions the water pipes running under its surface, can be drained. The surface has also been coloured black to improve its absorption. The water in the store is heated by circulating it from the store, through the tubes embedded under the surface of the collector and back to the store.
48 houses are heated from a central system, composed of two propane gas boilers of 250 kW each and a electric driven heat pump witha thermal output of 250 kW (freon R22 -5 C to +40 C). The solar and environmental energy is collected by three different operating modes:
1. Black painted concrete slabs heated by the global solar radiation and cooled by the water of the storage tank circulating through the inbeded pipings.
2. Heat from ambient air. Collected by forcing air through a heat exchanger (aerotherm 25 kW/k), which is chilled by the heat pump.
3. Heat from the ambient air to the storage tank when the water of the storage tank is cooler than the ambient air. To achieve long running cycles of the heat pump, the hot side of the heat pump feeds into an additional tank of 80 m3. This hot tank enables the use of low tariff electricity during the night. It should be noted that the houses will maximise the use of passive solar energy which does not form part of this EC-Demonstration project.
