HYBRID SOLAR ROOFS

Obiettivo

To demonstrate the benefits of retrofitting hybrid roof space solar collectors to 6 local authority inner city dwellings. Expected energy savings are 0.25 TOE/yr per house and payback 16 years.
The building's fabric heat loss is monitored by overheating the house and monitoring the steady state heat demand. The value thus found is 180 W/K. The ventilation rate monitored with tracer gas, is in normal state 0,7 +- 0,3 ach. Pressurization test in four of the six houses gave a range from 0.72 - 0.54. The houses are relatively tight.
The solar system worked as intended, offsetting about 40% of the space heating. It improved the indoor air quality. The local authority (London Borough of Newham) has decided to use the same system in a new rehabilitation scheme involving 3 blocks of flats.
A solar roof space collector consists of a conventional pitched roof with a transparent southerly aspect, generally of tough twin layer plastic. In this project twinwalled polycarbonate has been used. The attic space therefore heats up like a greenhouse and the warm air is blown by a fan through an insulated duct into the house below. When insufficient heat is collected the fan shuts off and a damper closes off the duct. The attic space is also insulated thereby minimising heat transfer through the ceiling.
This project is the result of previous research which showed the importance of simple design and control systems. This project will show how such hybrid roof collectors can be used on a variety of houses; and result in a simple control system for occupants. The 2/3 bedroom houses which accommodate the system are :
3 mid terrace, front elevation facing south
3 mid terrace, rear elevation facing south

Solar overcost is about 2,500 UKL per house.
