MULTI-FUEL CONCEPT FOR AVEDOERE POWER STATION N 2 UNIT

Obiettivo

Demonstration of the multi-fuel concept, where a biomass unit of 45 MWe is connected in parallel with a main unit of 390 MWe in Parallel Powered Combined Cycle with two gas turbines of total 105 MWe.
The multi-fuel concept results in efficiencies of 48% for the main unit, 41-47% for the biomass unit and 56/60% (depending on the gas turbine used) for the gas turbine unit.

The EU countries expect a continued rise in electricity consumption during the years to come. At the same time the EU is getting more and more concerned about the use of energy resources and their influence on the local and global environment.
During the last few years SK Power and Vattenfall have been working on the development of a new, advanced, high-efficiency, flexible concept for future generating units.
The so-called multi-fuel concept is designed for optimum utilisation of natural gas, coal and biomass for production of electricity and co-generated heat. The multi-fuel concept can be used with success in both condensing operating plants and in plants with co-generation of heat and electricity.
It is the aim of this Thermie project to demonstrate the multi-fuel concept, where a biomass unit of 45 MWe is connected to a main unit of 390 MWe in Parallel Powered Combined Cycle with two gas turbines of total 105 MWe.
The main unit can burn gas, coal and oil. The pressures and temperatures are higher than any existing plant of this size. This concept has unique efficiencies and fuel flexibility. The 45 MWe biomass unit is considerably larger than any straw-fired built so far. The gas turbines used are developed on the basis of the gas turbines used in aircraft engines and they have efficiencies considerably higher than what has been achieved until now.
The development of intercooled aero derivative gas turbines (ICAD) is not so far that such machines could be used for this project. However the ordered gas turbines have a potential for modification so that an increase in output and efficiency (expected to exceed 60%) in possible. SK Power will follow this development closely.
The very high efficiencies are a result of the Ultra Super Critical steam conditions (USC) and the synergetic effect obtained by connecting the units in the advanced cycle.
The great flexibility in the choice of fuel ensures lasting and reliable energy services at affordable costs and cults in reduced energy consumption and thereby also in a reduction of the CO2 emission. The CO2 emission is further reduced by the considerable use of biomass.
It is expected that the demonstration of the multi-fuel concept by showing high efficiencies in praxis will encourage the development and use of even more advanced cycles, and that the demonstration will result in dissemination of the concept.

Programma(i)

Programmi di finanziamento pluriennali che definiscono le priorità dell’UE in materia di ricerca e innovazione.

Argomento(i)

Invito a presentare proposte

Procedura per invitare i candidati a presentare proposte di progetti, con l’obiettivo di ricevere finanziamenti dall’UE.
