EFFICIENT LOW POLLUTION COMBUSTION SYSTEMS FOR FUEL FLEXIBILITY AT REDUCED COST

Obiettivo

The aim of this project is to demonstrate the improvement in fuel and operational flexibility that a new pulverised coal burner developed by International Combustion can bring to the operation of the Sines power station in Portugal. The burner is based on International Combustion "RoBTAS" technology for wall fired furnaces, and includes new features to give flame and coal particle distribution control. The ability to burn a wider range of coal at Sines will extend the potential sources of fuel supply to include those which at present are regarded as "difficult" and lower cost because of low volatility. These burners will improve the overall efficiency of combustion, saving approximately 20000 tonnes of coal each year.
The results for firing a "RoBTAS" burner in a single burner configuration have proved that the anticipated reduction in emissions and increase in flexibility should be achieved.
Conventional low NOx coal burners limit the formation of NOx by minimising the oxygen availability in the region of maximum coal volatile release within the flame and by controlling the mixing of the fuel and combustion air. These burners are of a fixed geometry and the performance is inflexible with changes in fuel or operating regime.
The 'RoBTAS' (Round Burner with Titled Air Supply) developed by I.C.incoprorates a dual tertiary air passage. This controls the near burner oxygen availability and increases the fuel and air mixing in the flame tail, retaining the near burner conditions for low NOx whilst improving the far burner field mixing for flame length and char burn out optimisation. Circumferential air staging is introduced by dividing the titled tertiary air supply into discrete jets using bluff body blockages across the tertiary air ducting. The flame patterns thus created cause furnace gases to be induced into the primary air/fuel stream. These are low in oxygen and at a high temperature which enhances the conditions needed for low NOx performance. This project involves the retrofit of twenty low NOx "RoBTAS" burners into the boiler of Campanhia Portuguesa de Produção de Electricidade (CPPE) at SINES POWER Station in Portugal. This is a 314 MW front wall fired unit which fires a range of imported World traded coals. The ability and flexibility of "RoBTAS" to control the air and fuel staging to suit the fuel creates a flame shape to fit the furnace environment, resulting in optimal emissions efficiency. Burner performance will be monitored by "in-boiler" measurements after retrofit. It is anticipated that the installation of RoBTAS burners will, in addition to increasing the range of potential fuels, produce an improvement that will save approximately 20000 tonnes of coal per annum.
