CERAMIC FILTER DEMONSTRATION PLANT FOR CLEANING HT HP GASES OF PFBC PLANT OF ESCATRON

Obiettivo

The aim of the project is to demonstrate the performance and availability of a ceramic filter plant that incorporates all the main features of a commercial size filter (same modules, same arrangement) so that it can be directly escalated by only increasing the number of modules and main dimensions, without the need of further demonstration tests. As the filter shall be connected to a nearly commercial PFBC plant, the operating conditions also are going to be similar to the future commercial ceramic filter plant.
The objectives of the project are :
- To test over long periods the main components of the filter in order to determine their life time.
- To determine the aging of the ceramic candles subject to long periods of operation.
- To optimize the filter parameters (face velocity, pressure drop, etc.) for the particular case of Teruel local coal.
- To determine the availability of the ceramic filter plant.
- Filtration parameters are stable even during a long term operation.
- Hot gas valves don't allow to go into the filter but control the flow throw the by-pass and filter.
- Filtration Plant is operating under the expected parameters.
- Most critical point in this project will be caused by condensation over the cold surfaces and dust bridging between ceramic elements.
The ceramic filter plant shall treat 1/9 of the combustion gases produced in the PFBC plant of ESCATRON. The combustion gases coming from the pressurized fluidized bed are cleaned through 9 pairs of primary and secondary cyclone. In one of these 9 flow currants the secondary cyclone shall be substituted by a ceramic filter located outside the combustor pressure vessel. After the ceramic filter the clean gas is sent to the gas turbine.
The installation consists of :
- Ceramic filter elements arranged in modules of 112 candles each in three stages.
- Ceramic filter pressure vessel.
- By-pass cyclone to guarantee sufficiently clean gases to the gas turbine in case of failure or shut down of the ceramic filter, allowing the plant to continue operation.
- Dust laden gas pipes and clean gas pipes connecting the primary cyclone inside the combustor, the ceramic filter and by-pass cyclone located outside the combustor pressure vessel.
- Shut-off gas valves to direct gas flow to the filteror by-pass.
- Compressed air cleaning system to produce counter flow air pulses for cleaning the elements.
- Ash removal system to transport, depressurize and cool the ashes collected in the filter.
- Cooling water system to remove the heat from ashes and recover it in the feed water cycle.
- Preheating system to avoid condensations of gases start-up.
- Process variables measuring instrumentation, control system and data collecting system to regulate cleaning sequences and to record and analyze the evolution of the process parameters.
The Project is innovative based on the following aspects :
- The design of this filter is a new concept of double supported candles from below the clean gas headers, minimising stresses in the elements, optimizing candle space occupation and thightness of the joint candle-header.
- The design of the filter is based on modules valid and identical for bigger commercial sizes, so that this filter reproduces the conditions of the commercial size ceramicfilter of a commercial PFBC plant.
- It operates with gases from the demonstration plant of ESCATRON so that the filter shall be subject to similar operating conditions of a commercial PFBC power plant with respect to gas characteristics, plant operation modes and period of hours.
- The filter shall handle dust loaded gases from a PFBC burning Teruel local lignites with high content of ashes.
The project will be developed in five different phases :
1 Design
2 Manufacturing
3 Assembly
4 Commissioning
5 Test and Evaluation
The foreseen project duration is four years with two of them dedicated to tests.
