The compilation of field measurements on buried pipes and their comparison with estimated design results

Obiettivo

Experts involved in the work of CEN/TC lS4-165/JWG 1 several times highlighted the need of measured data taken from installed pipes to be compared with results derived from the future approach and existing design methods. Measured data collated up to nov were only usable for qualitative conclusions. A need for more detailed measurements specially on pipes made from glass-reinforced thermosetting resins on which product specifications currently are being developed under the CPD, PPD and PED has been detected. Very limited work has been done to date by CEN/TC 155/WG 14/TG 3 being responsible for glass-reinforced plastics pipes to compare measured data with estimates. This group is working on a design approach for this type of pipe to support CEN/TC 164-165/JWG 1 drafting the future European design method which will result in an increase in the safety of the operating system and a consequential reduction in the probability of the occurrence of leakage resulting in environmental pollution.
CEN/TC 155/WG 14 has highlighted the need for more detailed work to be done in this proposed research project. Seven tasks are proposed to be worked in order to achieve an increase of reliability of the design methods available or a new approach to be developed. Existing field data on buried GRP pipes together with information about soil materials, trench and loading conditions as well as data from past soil box testE need to be re-collated and analyzed (Task 1). A range of different classes of GRP pipes covering various existing manufacturing processes needs being produced and examined to assess their properties and the related variances (Task 2).
An experimental test field covering a range of variations relative to proportions and environmental conditions such as water table, etc. will be constructed and following the installation of the pipes produced the soil and pipe behaviour over a period of time will be monitored (Task 3). In addition to the findings from the test installation Finite Element Analyses will be performed to extend the amount of data relative to deflections and strains in the pipe wall as well as the buckling behaviour of the pipes surrounded with soil (Task 4).
The model used in Task 4 will be calibrated using the findings from Task 3. The results of Tasks 3 and 4 will be used to evaluate at least two existing design approaches to verify and assess their suitability and the need for future modifications (Task 5).
Using the recommendations provided by EUROCODE 1 (CEN/TC 250) based on equal probability to failure and accounting for the influencing factors such as soil, installation, loads and pipe a concept for factors of safety will be evaluated (Task 6). The results and findings of the research work will be incorporated in relevant European standards (Task 7).
The mix of seven partners coming from six European member states and their skills provides a realistic basis for the commercial exploitation of the research results. It is planned to publish the findings in scientific or technical magazines and in papers presented to international conferences. The partners will organize a workshop for European design engineers and following the completion of the research work develop a software package to promote the use of the research work.
