Comparative evaluation of European methods for sampling and sample preparation of soils

Ziel

Like each chain is as weak as its weakest link, the quality of environmental analytical research, e.g. soil analysis, depends on the quality of each step of the whole investigation, from planning, sampling, sample pre-treatment and chemical analysis up to the evaluation and interpretation of the analytical results. Especially sampling and sample pre-treatment are phases which have been shown to be crucial for the quality of results (comparability and reproducibility).

The project aims to evaluate the performance of existing sampling and sample pre-treatment methodologies used for soil analysis by comparing them and identifying the strong and weak points in various procedures tested with the objectives of evaluating how sampling may affect data quality, improving comparability and reproducibility of soil sampling methods and developing Standards Operating Procedures (SOPs) for soil sampling and sample pre-treatment.
The project is presently in its first phase, i.e. selection and characterisation of a sampling site.
