Ziel
Large Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) are mainly used for process control and quality-inspection of manufactured parts in industrial production (e.g.automotive machine tool, aircraft, and spacecraft industry). The correctness and reliability of CMMs which are the ultimate reference in manufacturing processes must be guaranteed because it is essential for the safety and the quality of the manufactured products as well as it is for the cost-effectiveness of these manufacturing processes (Rejections and non-conformities due to dimensional inaccuracies are estimated to be about 8% in automobile industry).
The full calibration of any CMM requires the development and assessment of three tools: calibration pattern, machine parametric error correction software and associated calibration procedures.
Currently, no industrially recognised method exists for large CMMs calibration; consequently, each company has to develop its own approximated calibration methods, normally based in the extrapolation of the procedures used for smallmedium sized CMMs. Associated procedures and tools are not sufficiently developed nor have been thoroughly tested; its industrial applicability is currently accepted due to the inexistance of more reliable alternatives.
The collaboration between industrial companies an Research Organisations in the Consortium, fosters the development of new calibration techniques, based in rigorous scientifical approach, but also in the cost-effectiveness principles demanded by industrialists.
Project goal is to develop reference objects, calibration procedures, and parametric error correction softwares suited to the specific metrology industry needs: this means reliable, easy to use and fast to handle tools to assess the errors in large CMMs.
Probability of the results of the project being taken up by the European industry (promotion of a de-facto standard) is high: partners in this proposal own 50% of the world wide metrology industry market share, and are responsibles for the dimensional quality control in the production lines of the most important industries concerned (automobile, aircraft...).
European body of knowledge for the calibration of large artefacts will benefit of the technical reports arising from the project : most partners in the Consortium are recognisably active in the European organisms responsible for the drafting and elaboration of new standards: EUROMET, ISO TC3 - WG 10 (ISO 10360/2),ISO TC3-SG 1, VDI/VDE WG 7.6 UNI, SIT, WECC...
