Methodology for electromagnetic susceptibility analysis

Obiettivo

The purposes of the MESA project are to develop a first quantitative approach by combining three different ways:
- a methodological analysis for EM susceptibility
- a new equipment which may be used for the evaluation of electromagnetic coupling functions between EM sources and sensible equipment
a numerical code calculating the various coupling functions of the site which may be used for the optimisation of the electromagnetic protections.
A new methodology for susceptibility analysis is now accessible and may be considered as a first step for solving EM problems on industrial sites:
a testing equipment is available to achieve tests on various sites for different operational configurations. This equipment, operating between a few volts to 20 kV, generates incident pulsed waveforms and may be able to detect and record corresponding perturbations on equipment
a numerical tool based on the new concept of the Electromagnetic Topology is now available and may be used on operational sites to calculate full threat perturbations and to define optimised protections.
Finally, MESA may be considered as a first step in the quantitative approach of the electromagnetic protection of industrial sites; it has to be completed by a more applied program including optimised protection techniques and new standards.
Background
Various sites for industrial or commercial activity such as airports, communication networks, industrial plants, hospitals, banks etc may be severely affected by electromagnetic sources. On major installations, electromagnetic protections are already recommended; these protections are essentially based on empirical definitions: no measurements and no quantitative evaluation are proposed for the moment.
