Measuring product conformity to sdl specifications

Obiettivo

IT Communication Standards, particularly within the telecomms area, are becoming increasingly sophisticated and consequently complicated. Testing is the only way of ensuring products conform to the relevant standards, and can interwork with products from different manufacturers. Developing adequate tests is both time consuming and expensive, but it is essential to ensure the communications market, which depends on successful interworking, can function effectively. As standards become more complicated, the difficulty of establishing conformance to standards, and consequent interworking problems, are a major barrier to the development of the telecomms market both within the EU and internationally.
Currently tests are produced either manually or by use of semi-automated tools. The cost is prohibitive, particularly for small companies, and the quality of the tests is often poor. There is, therefore, a need for a more reliable and cheaper method of developing tests.

The Technical objective of this project is to produce a tool such that: Using minimal user intervention one can generate TTCN tests at a rate of no more than 10 minutes for each test; Use of the tool will offer at least an 80% saving in the cost of test production over existing tools; Offer an 80% reduction in the time taken to produce and validate a test suite. The social objective is to give the SME partners an understanding of the potential market for test production and to provide them with a tool to exploit this market with increased employment opportunity in this sector.
Work has started on the project, but there are no intermediate results at this early stage.
The work will be based on an existing tool for generating TTCN from extended finite state machine descriptions, which in turn uses the novel search algorithm already developed by the RTD provider. There are four main activities in the project. First, choosing which features from TTCN and SDL will be supported. Secondly, mapping the SDL into a form acceptable to the existing tool. Thirdly, extending the tool to make use of the SDL in deciding other TTCN features (constraint structure, testing configuration etc.). Finally, evaluating the usability and performance of the tool in practice. Both SDL and TTCN are large and complex languages with a wide variety of disparate features. It is very unlikely that the prototype tool can, or even should, deal with all possible combinations. In terms of the methodology for taking decisions about the language features to be supported it is essential that the SME users are actively involved and that the tool does support all the features that are necessary. To this end partners will be involved in the trials who have experience in the Telecomms and also more widespread fields.
