Thematic network for ultraviolet measurements

Obiettivo

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is highly energetic electromagnetic radiation in the wavelength region of 100-400 nm. Uv radiation changes properties of many materials and has therefore recently found several applications in e.g. medical, cosmetic, testing and manufacturing industry. On the other hand, UV radiation also affects organic tissues. Therefore, high UV levels from e.g. sun or welding equipment cause health risks. Concerns of the environmental and health effects of solar UV radiation penetrating into the biosphere through the depleted ozono layer have greatly emphasised the urge for accurate and reliable UV radiometry.
In recent years, radiometry at visible wavelengths has experienced significant progress. Improvement of primary and transfer standards has enabled morereliable measurements throughout the traceability chain. However, the progressof measurements at UV wavelengths has been slower. Part of the problems are associated with the standards since both sources and detectors tend to be unstable in the UV. Especially, there is lack of reliable easy-to-use calibration methods for needs of industry.
The thematic network for UV measurements is aimed to enhance exchange of results and ideas between the research laboratories and industry and also to obtain a better understanding of the problems associated with the calibration and testing work.
The network has participants from all branches of UV measurements. All majorEuropean national standards laboratories, equipment manufactures and end-users of equipment and services are involved. The thematic network organises four workshops devoted to outlining and seeking solutions to problems in UV measurements. Four working groups will be established to work on specific subjects that are found most essential. Training courses will be arranged covering subjects of high interest. The network will establish WWW-pages and a newsletter to improve the the exchange of information in the field.
The network helps to improve the competitive position of European industry by promoting better measurement and calibration procedures. The improved exchange of knowledge helps in targeting the research and development efforts into areaswith major problems and reduces the amount of overlapping research. In the long run this results in efficient use of research resources. Improvedmeasurement methods in e.g. medical UV applications, solar UV measurements and occupational measurements at work places will lead to improved safety.

Programma(i)

Programmi di finanziamento pluriennali che definiscono le priorità dell’UE in materia di ricerca e innovazione.

Argomento(i)

Invito a presentare proposte

Procedura per invitare i candidati a presentare proposte di progetti, con l’obiettivo di ricevere finanziamenti dall’UE.
