Water repellent agents test methods and performance criteria

Obiettivo

The performance of hydrophobic treatment and their effects on materials in the long run were unknown, and their application has become the object of a discussion in terms of conservation ethics. Moreover, an overwhelming and confusing number of scientific and trade names of water-repellent products have appeared, whereas neither standards nor test methods concerning both the constituents of the products and their application were available. Water-repellents have been (gradually) accepted and now a days these products are internationally used, a few thousand tons per year in the EC. Unfortunately, no standardised testing procedures have been developed yet, to analyse or compare the basic resin or the final product, which can be internationally used. The consequence of this situation is that each country and even each laboratory (industry or research institute) carries out tests and publishes technical reports which are hardly comparable.

Objectives
The aim of this project is to define standardised test methods for measuring relevant parameters of water repellent agents, in order to provide performance criteria. The different tasks will include the:
- analysis of existing procedures and a literature survey;
- definition of parameters related to the substrates (surface porosity, pore size distribution, dryness of the surface) and the application of agents;
- the description of methods which will be used to measure effectiveness parameters;
- the measurement of secondary effects (surface aspect, appearance, colour, gloss).

Secondly, a testing procedure will be defined based on the results of the first task in accordance with the needs and the means of the field taking into account:
- the basic approach should be simple and well-defined in order to facilitate the comparison of test results;
- the extension of the basic approach according to specific problems and remarks should be possible in order to cover all the different fields of application;
- the testing procedure has to be relevant in regard to the new products without solvent which are now developed for ecological raisons;
- the durability of the hydrophobic treatments will not be assessed in this project due to the time consuming experiments which are required to perform such investigation.

Work programme
The project is structured in three main phases:
1. Analytical Phase: Comparison of procedures applied in European Countries and first meeting with CEN groups working on natural stones, concrete and masonry;
2. Technical Phase: The most important one in term of work.
The main tasks are the following : selection and characterisation of water repellent agents and substrates, testing of treated materials using the new harmonised procedure;
3. Dissemination Phase: Inter-comparison, including industrial companies, will be performed for validation. Dissemination including creation of a WebSite.

State of progress
The kick-off meeting was held at the BBRI on the 23th of November.
