Specifications for a harmonised european calibration station for improved falling weight deflectomers measurement of road quality

Objectif

Objectives
The main objective of the project is development of a harmonised method for quantification of the relationship between pavement structure parameters and FWD equipment configuration accounting for aspects of wave propagation. A pavement response model will be developed for interpretation of FWD test data independent of the type and model used. A PC driven numerical software package will be developed for forward calculation of pavement response and back-analysis of deflections for inferring critical pavement layer parameters making them independent from the way that the data were collected. A prototype FWD calibration station will be designed that facilitates calibration of the FWD without having the deflection sensors dismounted. Finally a set of calibration protocols will be written and presented for acceptance by CEN.

State of progress
Most of the material testing has been completed and is in the phase of determination of model parameter input. The first release of the spectral element model "Lambda" has shown that is capable of revealing effects of variation on load pulse duration on pavement response. Most classic programmes could not cope with this aspect, consequently overestimating bearing capacity and underprediction pavement life of roads on soft subgrade. Because of the formulation of the spectral element method, one element only is needed for simulation of a whole layer. No sub-layers are needed. This involves that the model is fast (matter of seconds) and can be used for routine FWD data analysis. The basic equations used in the model have been published. A first set of calibration protocols has been issued in Record 18 of CROW in NL.

Background
The Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) is the most deployed non-destructive testing device for bearing capacity of road and airfield pavements. A falling mass drops on a loading plate with rubber buffers and generates a loading pulse ranging from 20 ms to 60 ms depending on model and make. The deflection of the pavement surface is measured at various radial distances. Usage of different types of FWD results into different evaluation data on the same pavement. Currently it is only possible to calibrate components of the FWD and not the device fully equipped.
Workprogramme
Asphalt, roadbase and subgrade samples are tested at various temperatures, loading rates and degree of compaction to determine the pavement material parameters for the complex response model used. The pavement structure is simulated by use of newly developed axi-symmetric spectral elements. The spectral element method elegantly combines the exact solution of wave motion with the finite element organisation of system matrices. FWD data are collected at a wide variety of pavement structures and types of subgrade to feed the pavement model. The FWD data will be analysed via the new approach and the classic models for disclosing the increase in accuracy. Specifications to be met by the prototype calibration station will be drafted, while also instrumentation will reviewed on suitability. A set of calibration protocols will be drafted for usage Europe wide.
