Technologies for European Surveys of Travel Behaviour

Obiettivo

Improve the current practice of long-distance travel behaviour surveys, crucial in European transport policies for transport infrastructure, transport regulation and financing.

1) Assessing the technology: new computing, communication and information tools are currently being implemented or adopted, i.e. setup-boxes for the tv, GPS-Systems, personal organizers, GSM telephones etc. - suitability of these wider developments for travel diary survey work -.
2) Real-time recording of travel diaries: Palmtop-computers and other portable tools, such as GPS units, should allow complex, real time travel diary surveys without overburdening the respondents. Appropriate test survey and will test in the field to establish the longer term potential of this approach.
3) Supporting the respondents: the increasing availability in and familiarity of household with computers opens the possibility to conduct travel diary surveys with home computers. Basing the survey on this tool will allow the combination with other tools such as geographical information systems, which can be used to make the data entry task easier, as well as more consistent through error checking. Developing of an appropriate survey and test it in the field to establish to longer term suitability.
4) Enriching the travel diary results with GIS: GIS are profoundly changing the coding and storing of travel diary data. It will focus on how GIS-support could improve the coding of the routes chosen by travellers.
5) Parsing travel diary results by developing a AI-based parser of coded travel diary results, which would check the entries for completeness and consistency thereby enhancing the quality and speed of this crucial processing step.
6) WWW-interface to travel diary results by establishing a WWW-based interface between the user and this specialized software to permit easier access to the results of the surveys.
7) Assessment: Comparison of effectiveness and comparability with the traditional approaches.

These seven substantial workpackages will be supported by two further work packages:
8) Internal review: The partners involved in this workpackage will act as internal referees through a continuous review of the work undertaken and through a series of two workshops presenting the results.
9) Management and liaison: This workpackage provides the resources for the coordination of this complex project, the publication of its results and for the liaison with the related Tasks of the Work Programme; in particular Tasks 1 to 6, but also the projects in the other Themes of the Work Programme using travel diaries for their research.

The project is tightly intregrated with the project MEST, which involves the same partners. It is coordinated with the relevant other projects such as a Infostat, Bridges etc. Special attention is given to the activities in the area coordinated by EUROSTAT

Campo scientifico (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifica i progetti con EuroSciVoc, una tassonomia multilingue dei campi scientifici, attraverso un processo semi-automatico basato su tecniche NLP. Cfr.: Il Vocabolario Scientifico Europeo.
