Obiettivo
Results obtained under the existing contract EV-0068-CV showed the applicability of the photocatalytic method to many pollutants and accordingly to the treatment of waters contaminated with a variety of organic pollutants. Several degradation pathways have been investigated for a better understanding of the decomposition processes. However, still more work is needed in this direction.
The work will involve the following:
analysis of pollutants by various means (high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with different detectors (in particular photodiode array), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS), ion chromatography (IC), total organic carbon (TOC), etc);
use of preconcentration devices for analyses at sub parts per million and parts per billion levels, development of analyses by fluorescence for the same purpose;
measurements of adsorbed amounts by HPLC and fluorescence detectors, development of techniques based upon rapid desorption of preadsorbed species;
preparation of various titanium dioxide (TiO2) samples of controlled morphologies by a series of methods (sol gel, colloidal emulsion, flame reactor, Matijevic technique, etc);
preparation of TiO2 beads, immobilization of TiO2 on supports and use of membranes permitting the passage of pollutants and not that of TiO2 particles;
and engineering studies with bench scale photoreactors (approximately 100 litres).
