SIMULATION MODEL FOR RESERVOIR HETEROGENEITIES

Obiettivo

Elaboration of a geological deposit model shaped by a mathematical model in order to provide a description of the heterogeneities at metric and hectometric scale of the physical properties of a sandstone reservoir that can be used by the reservoir engineer in view of an optimal field exploitation.
To solve the problem, heterogeneous reservoirs simulations have been set up :
1. a methodology for studying outcrops and geological data
2. a new method of simulations of random series : the method of trunketed Gausian functions. The application of this method requires the respect of the horizontal stationnarity. This 2D method tested on a gas storage site with the parameters deriving from the study of a site in Yorkshire can only be generalized if addtitional studies are carried out namely :
- consideration of the non stationnarity according to the horizontal
- consideration of the limits of the units and of their reference surface by simultaneous simulations of lines (2D) or of surfaces ( 3D)
- acquisition and processing of new field data to set up database allowing to calculate the geostatical parameters in view of calibration and/or as a complement of the results obtained with the sole well data.
Some environments or changes of scale of the simulations (different magnitude order of the heterogeneities) may lead to the elaboration of new additional simulation methods.
This simulation method presents can be applied to a number of environments of the fluvio-deltaic type caracterized by sub -parallel strata with perfectly defined plane limits. The program allowing to run these simulations constitutes a research tool. This tool should be industrialized to make its utilization convivial.
The project is divided in two successive phases:
PHASE 1:STUDY OF THE FORMATION
The object of the field acquisition in two and three dimensions was to acquire geological, geophysical and petrophysical data allowing set-up the model.
These studies will be carried out on the middle Jurasic outcrop of the Yorkshire cliffs in Great Britain. The selected cliff is a remarkable representation over 10 kilometers length and a height of 30 to 150 m of a wide variety fluvial to fluvio-deltaic deposits, hardly altered by the tectonics and thus providing a good image of their original representation. The sandstonelike sedimentary elements (eventual reservoirs) show extensions ranging from dozens of meters (clay dominant) to several kilometers (sandstone dominant ). The light overburden of these elements allows easy access through small core-drills located at the back of the cliff, and thus makes it possible to obtain physical properties measurements less altered than those acquired on the outcrops. Core-drills will also provide us with well calibrated log shapes.
The sedimentologic study of outcrops will include a photogeological study of the whole cliff, performed with the help of documents obtained by helicopter. A set of vertical cross-sections will then made, thus providing a detailed quantitative description of the different sandstone or clay elements in relation with the deposit mode at a scale below the kilometer.
The execution of core-drills near the outcrops will allow the passage from a 2-D heterogeneities description to a 3-D description at a kilometric scale and the comparison of the obtained results with those of the oil drillings thanks to the recording of logs.
The physical properties will be measured on samples taken from the outcrops and on plugs sampled from the cores. A geostatistic interpretation of the values obtained will then be proposed.
High resolution georadar profiles will connect the core-drill with one another and with the outcrops in order to improve the threedimensional image of the studied sedimentary elements.
PHASE 2 : ELABORATION OF THE 3-D GEOSTATISTIC MODEL
This model aims at describing the heterogeneities that can be the object of a direct exploitation by the reservoir engineer in order to optimize the development of fields. The general geological data will thus have to be entered in the numerical model of the field.
The model will be elaborated by integrating the results acquired during the sedimentologic studies and put in shape by the geostatistical processing.
A first step will consist in achieving a 2-D model based, among others, on the study of the images of the cliff.
The second step will consist in achieving a 3-D model deriving from the 2-D model, the 3-D geostatistical modelling and the sedimentologic model.
A third step will consist in controlling the model according to real data from a North Sea field.
