TENSION LEG PLATFORM WITH HIGH PAYLOAD FOR A NATURAL GAS LIQUEFACTION PLANT IN WATER-DEPTHS OF 500 TO 1,000 METERS

Obiettivo

The project concentrates on the development of a tension leg platform for high deck loads as a supporting structure for a natural gas liquefaction plant in water up to 1,000 m deep, in order to economically exploit natural gas reservoirs in deep-water locations.
Within this research project, technical solutions have been developed for the exploitation of offshore natural gas deposits in greater depths of water.
The entire system consists of the foundation components (pile templates), the buoyancy body, the flex-jointed tension leg anchors, the coupling devices and the adjusting mechanisms, as well as of the jack-up platform which is deposited with its supporting columns (pillars) upon the buoyancy body once this has been braced.
The desired reduction in expenditure has lead to a far-reaching integration of functions which were hitherto assigned to separate components of the system :
- the external storage of the liquefied natural gas should be integrated into the production platform, respectively into the buoyancy body;
- the indirect offloading of the liquefied natural gas, for example, via an articulated tower, should take place directly from the platform to the LNG tanker.
The savings in capital investment which can be achieved, willbe, according to present-day findings, of about 25 % permitting a corresponding reduction of fixed costs resulting from interest payments. Additionally, savings of variable costs will also be considerable, as the relatively high expenses for maintenance, repairs and staffing of the external temporary storage facilities and the articulated tower will be economized.
In keeping with the purpose of the R and D project to construct a tension-leg platform for high deck loads as supporting system for a natural gas liquefaction plant including LNG intermediate storage and direct loading facility, two variants have been developed.
The difference between them consists mainly in the location of the storage tanks for the LNG :
- storage facility in the platform
- storage facility in the buoyancy body.
Both of the proposed TLP designs offer a storage capacity of approx. 43000 cubic meters of LNG.
The net load for both of the solutions proposed, comes to about 36000 tons i.e. about 40% of the total (gross) weight of the tension leg platform. The storage capacity is in direct proportion to the transfer tankers of 50000 m3. Three tankers will be used in shuttle service for offshore loading, so as to interrupt LNG production only during prolonged periods of bad weather (docking possible over 90 % and loading over 95% of the year).
The development work examines from a technical standpoint the possibility of using a TLP with a buffer store as a support structure for a natural gas liquefaction plant in water up to 1,000 m deep. The overall system comprises the foundation components, tensioning system, the buoyancy body, the jack-up platform and the transfer system for the product.
