ENHANCED OIL RECOVERY FROM LOW PERMEABLE CHALK RESERVOIRS

Ziel

The aim of the FOLKA project is to investigate some problems related to waterflooding and gas injections in low permeable chalk reservoirs.
The project includes 4 phases:
- Planning and preliminary studies
- Gas injection miscibility conditions
- Chalk wettability conditions
- Reservoir modelling, field studies
The FOLKA project includes a laboratory program using samples from Danish and Norwegian chalk reservoirs. The laboratory program is carried out by IKU in Trondheim.
Minimum Miscible Pressure was determined experimentally and theoretically for Danish and Norwegian oil reservoirs.
MMP was above reservoir pressure for lean hydrocarbon gas and nitrogen. For carbon dioxide the MMP was below reservoir pressure
. This was confirmed by core displacement tests.
PHASE 1 : PLANNING AND PRELIMINARY STUDIES
Selection of reservoir for fluid sampling and core sampling. Preparation of fluid PVT report.
PHASE 2 : GAS/OIL PHASE BEHAVIOUR
Phase behaviour was studied in a visual saphire cell at reservoir conditions.
Slim tube tests were carried out using lean hydrocarbon gas as the displacing fluid.
Minimum Miscible Pressure (MMP) was determined at 45 MPa. This is about two times reservoir pressure. MMP was checked by correlations.
PHASE 3 : CORE DISPLACEMENT TESTS
THREE GAS TYPES WERE USED AS DISPLACING hree gas types were used as displacing fluid
- lean hydrocarbon gas
- nitrogen
- carbon dioxide.
Lean hydrocarbon gas and nitrogen are assumed to displace the oil through partial miscibility, whereas carbon dioxide results in a full miscible displacement process. This assumption was confirmed by the oil recovery in the three tests.
PHASE 4 : NUMERICAL SIMULATIONS
- The compositional PVT package, COPEC, was used to verify the oil characterization. The reservoir simulator, CERES, which includes the COPEC fluid model was used to simulate the slimtube displacement tests.
Good correlation between experimental and calculated MMP-values was obtained.
