ADAPTATION OF A GRAVITY FOUNDATION SYSTEM TO REMOVABLE PRODUCTION PLATFORMS

Obiettivo

To adapt a gravity foundation system to removable production platforms.
Model tests have demonstrated the feasibility of platform retrieval by minimizing the bond forces through drainage at the soil-structure interface. Some systems and devices to achieve the drainage conditions have been studied, and have to be integrated into the concrete structure at the design stage. Although this project has not yet been the subject of any application, there is a potential for its partial application in the future.
Breakout forces required to retrieve objects embedded in clay may be of the magnitude of the bearing capacity of the soil, but the experimental conditions are very different from offshore platform conditions. A laboratory model test on clay samples under a hydrostatic pressure of 1 MPA was carried out in order to get a better understanding of the phenomena.
The project includes:
- selection of soil characteristics
- complete bibliographical study
- changes in soil characteristics under platform loadings
- experimental study of suction at the soil-structure interface; investigation of means to accelerate suction dissipation
- theoretical approach of the phenomena
- design of suitable foundation systems and devices in order to cope with retrieval requirements.
