INNOVATORY TECHNIQUES FOR AN AUTOMATED ROBOTIC SUBMERSIBLE SYSTEM FOR USE IN THE EXPLORATION SURVEY [PHASE 2]

Obiettivo

The objective of the SID vehicle concept is to provide a more integrated and dedicated package than has been previously possible . As a minimum it was decided to take the radical approach that the vehicle had to have the ability to be controlled in all six degrees of freedom and thus the astable or hydrobatic vehicle concept was established. It also deliberately makes use of some technologies which are not generally found within the subsea industry but which are used on a regular basis in other sectors of industry.
WA believe this approach to be the first step towards the development of a truly successful automated robotic submersible system capable of maintenance and integrity control of offshore installations.
The project team has been successful in producing an astable ROV system design that will undertake maintenance and integrity checks on offshore structural installations.
Whilst it is impossible at this stage to completely quality the above statement, the results obtained at this stage of the overall development programme are very encouraging. The results so far are in the form of design data, drawings, calculations and computer analysis. The results of the design process have not lead to any major obstacles being highlighted that mean the programme should be discontinued. Indeed the opposite is more justifiable in that the results indicate every element of success. The design process has not been carried out without any problems in its execution.
Some areas of work have taken more effort than has been anticipated , certain developing technology has meant that some of the work scope has changed, and some areas of work has highlighted deficiencies in the current state of the art technology.
Having studied the limitations to current systems it has been possible to establish an overall design concept to match the requirements for maintenance and integrity control of offshore installations. One of the main conclusion WA have come to is that any new automated robotic submersible system will have to be designed for the duty in an attempt to avoid being drawn into producing a compromise based on a conventional production vehicle as has been the case to date. Also fairly radical changes in design philosophy will have to be employed for any new system to succeed, and the application of technologies normally found outside the subsea industry may be necessary for the full potential to be realized.
The ideas put forward in this application have been developed by Winchester Associates and provides the radical approach to achieving an automated robotic submersible system specifically dedicated to maintenance and integrity control, the system is referred to as a Structural Inspection Device or "SID".
SID is an astable or hydrobatic vehicle designed to be able to achieve combined pitch and roll angles of +/- 90 degrees and +/- 180 degrees respectively. This gives the system a full six degree of freedom capability enabling movement in any direction at any attitude of pitch, roll or yaw.
There is therefore a fundamental difference between this system and other more conventional systems developed to date, in that traditionally ROVs have been designed to be stable and therefore to remain more or less upright. For the majority of applications this conventional format is ideal and there is no reason to change it
. However, for the more advanced and sophisticated tasks where the replacement of the diver is considered economically and practically desirable then an ability to emulate the divers freedom of movement would be an advantage.
