Obiettivo
The objectives of this project are to test the performances of 16 electric vehicles equipped with nickel/sodiumchloride batteries. The high energy density of the batteries (>80 Wh/kg) will enable a vehicle range of more than 100 km, therefore obviating the need for opportunity charging during the day and increasing the use of electricity at night. The target is to substitute a gasoline consumption of about 8,5 l/100 km (version with IC engines) by an electricity consumption of about 22,5 kWh/100 km in average per vehicle.
The vehicles will be used in Paris, Aachen, Liege and Maastricht and the monitoring will enable and evaluation of the energy consumption structure, customer acceptance and battery endurance. It is expected to achieve, for an average of 11000 ECU on energy consumption and of 35400 ECU on maintenance, tax and insurance costs, when comparing the 16 electric vehicles to versions with IC engines. Battery price in future volume production is anticipated to be 260 ECU/ kWh, which means a payback of 2.3 years at commercial scale.

In this project 16 electric vehicles from Opel and Renault equipped with Zebra batteries will be operated in the cities of Paris, Aachen, Maastricht and Liège; These electric vehicles will have a practical range of more than 100 km, which is enough for the majority of the daily city trips lengths; the vehicles do not need opportunity charging and can be recharged mainly over night during low power production periods of the power generation plants. The use of off-peak power improves the vehicle's economy, the power plant efficiency and the utilisation of the distribution system. The vehicles shall be charged at the standard 230V/16 A sockets so there is no infrastructure necessary.
The data acquisition in this project will be done by FKA in the cities of Aachen, Liège and Maastricht, by REGIENOV in Paris. The registred data will be km, battery cycles, actual capacity, OCV, internal resistance and charged energy distinguished between day and night charging. Citelec will develop criteria for the acceptance of electric vehicles. Based on these questionnaire will be developed for the evaluation of the acceptance and experience of the users of electric vehicles.
The innovative importance of the project is :
- Measure on a limited statistical basis the day/night charging behaviour of EV user having sufficient practical range of more than 100 km.
- Collect limited statistical data on life time of an "advanced battery" in practical day to day use.
- Collect empirical data of the acceptance of modern electric vehicles by normal users.
The availability and demonstration of these results are new and necessary for major decisions on the market introduction of electric vehicles equipped with this technology.
The total energy saving per year is 54.4 MWH for 16 vehicles and the CO2 emissions are reduced from 52 t to 25.4 t (52%).
