Objective
In the planned project a new type of services bus with the following properties will be demonstrated :
* Average energy savings and reduction of CO2-emissions of 30% compared to today's city buses.
* Zero emission operation in limited restriction areas
* Average reduction of the pollution to approximately a half compared to conventional service buses.
* Comfortable, quiet low floor buses.
* Economically attractive as a series product.
A new alternative innovative technology is presented by the "electric transmission" as performed by Magnet-Motor GmbH. Buses with this diesel-electric drive system have electric motors integrated into the driving wheels; the electric energy is supplied by a generator, which is mounted directly to the diesel engine.
This coupling between the combustion engine and the wheels, which replaces mechanical components and functions (such as gearbox, drive shaft, clutch, retarder) with electric components, electronic control and conversion systems brings the excellent qualities of an electric vehicle without having the disadvantages of a battery powered system.
This drive combination would not be feasible with standard electric components : the system would be far too large and heavy. The system needs novel electric components of highest power density, best efficiency and excellent controllability. The latest generation of electric components by Magnet-Motor meets these requirements.
The new propulsion principle brings a wide variety of advantageous technical features for vehicles:
* the mechanics of the drive train become quite simple. By virtue of the electric single wheel drives the rear axle becomes unnecessary.
* the constant variable and jerkfree electric drive ensures excellent driving comfort. The electronic control of the propulsion includes also the functions of an anti-lock brake or traction control.
* The diesel engine plus generator only have to provide (electrical) power.
The fuel intensive and highly polluting operating conditions which are inevitable in conventional vehicles are omitted completely, thus :
- reduced fuel consumption
- minimal pollution
- higher efficiency of diesel engine
* The complete drive train requires less maintenance. The electric components are maintenance free.
The electric transmission is the ideal technical basis for including additional electric energy sources or energy storage systems.
