Obiettivo
The aim of the demonstration project is to :
- put these new vehicles into real operating conditions, as they have not been curently operated yet within the Member States of the EU
- establish the provisions for a use in normal operating conditions
- get over the reticence of cities due to the innovating aspect and their fears as for security of the system.
- to make a large information and propagation campaign possible.
It must be emphasised that the project presents an exceptional opportunity to inform the general public, as the garbage collecting activity is closely related to the daily preoccupation of the citizens.
The project brings together energy suppliers (gas companies) from three countries (Belgium, Sweden and Germany), each of them with a commitment to the project.
The gas companies will provide the cities with full technical and/or financial support regarding the construction of the refuelling station as well as for the security aspects of the vehicles, the station and the related infrastructure (garage, workshop).
ANTWERPEN : operation of all 4 garbage trucks is satisfactory and without problems. The refuelling station functions well. A CNG metering system will be installed as well as a quick fill section.
GÖTEBORG : The 5 test trucks and the 9 belonging to the project are operational without problems.
GELSENKIRCHEN : 6 garbage trucks operate satisfactory and without problems. The seventh vehicle has been returned to the manufacturer as problems with the gas system could not be solved adequately and therefore made normal duty impossible.
This project is a demonstration project implementing natural gas garbage trucks for which the research and development stage has been completed.
It is this new application in normal operating conditions which constitutes the innovative nature of this demonstration project.
The overall process consists of :
* overcoming the users reluctance to use a new fuel, modify their operating customs and their fears concerning security.
* adjusting the operating and maintenance procedures to enable natural gas vehicles to be used in this activity.
* using these demonstrations as a facility for information campaigns and visits from other potential users in order to spread the use of natural gas as a fuel for garbage trucks.
The project aims to reduce considerably the air pollution produced by the most polluting vehicles used for public services in urban centres.
The reduction of noise and the suppression of undesirable smell is another target.
