Obiettivo
SITE is a feasibility study to evaluate the utilisation of new telematics applications for urban transport in five medium-sized EU cities. Its aim is to improve mobility within them through rational use of different forms of transport, and enhance their quality of life. Priorities will be to cut traffic congestion and improve the benefits of public transport. The study will include identification of user needs, a description of the applications, and evaluation and quality control strategies. A crucial aspect of the project is integration of the results of applications in each city taking part.
The SITE project proposes the demonstration of new telematic technologies in the field of urban transport in medium sized cities. The objective of SITE is to improve the mobility conditions by means of rational use of different transport modes and achieve an improvement of the urban quality of life. The functional objectives in the transport field are aiming at (a) traffic congestion reduction, (b) public transport improvement, measured by means of modal shift to Public Transport and the associated benefits.
The initial proposal of SITE was reduced during the evaluation of the Telematics Applications Programme to a Feasibility Study. The aim of the present project is to demonstrate the feasibility of the SITE project, which will be proved at technical, economic financial and operational level. The participants in the project represent the medium size cities of Vitoria, Evora, Siena, Bochum and Cork.
The following works will be carried out: (1) To identify users groups (profile and size) and their needs for each city (type and volume). (2) To describe the telematics applications that meet together user groups' needs, linking telematics services and transport needs. (3) To define a feasible plan of demonstration showing the technical, economic and operational aspects. (4) To define an evaluation approach and a quality control plan to ensure that the results are really reaching the objectives. (5) To evaluate the expected benefits of the project at local level and the European added value. Integration task for integrating results from each city application is crucial.
The expected results are the full definition of the users needs and functional requirements as well as the demonstration plan. Impacts and benefits of the project will be estimated in order that he feasibility of the project will be proved.
