Obiettivo
Phytophthora cinnamomi is a wide host-range pathogen found in many Subtropical, tropical and temperate regions (zentmyer, 1980). Hosts include woody plants such as avocado. Phytophthoral root rot is the main factor limiting cultivation in most of the countries where avocado is currently grown, and control, wherever it has been attempted, has not been effective. The scientific content of the project can provide an improved understanding of the disease and some solutions towards its control. The approach is based on the successful application of integrated pest management (IPM) principles, as root rot can be effectively controlled, sustaining and even increasing productivity as well as maintaining a balanced agro-ecosystem. Specific aims of the proposal are: 1) To apply the principles of integrated crop management towards reducing economic loss caused by P. cinnamomi, thus sustaining avocado productivity; 2) To gain in depth knowledge of the avocado production system used in Michoacan (mexico) with a view towards extrapolating data to other avocado-producing regions affected by P.-cinnamomi; 3) Evaluation, selection and development of avocado rootstoc ks resistant-tolerant to P. cinnamomi; development of a test in order to properly evaluate resistance; -4)-evaluate the agronomic characteristics of avocado rootstocks With resistance to P. cinnamomi in infested soils in different countries and locations with different soil and climatic conditions; 5) Evaluate the effects of host nutrition on root growth and disease resistance; 6) Genetic identification of selected resistant-tolerant avocados and P. cinnamomi strains using isoenzyme analysis and molecular markers; and ,-7) To extend the economic potential of avocado production by increasing export potential to European markets.
