Obiettivo
The METASA research consortium is working with citizens from all walks of life in four small towns to identify the best multimedia services for them in the Information Society. The project takes its lead from the requirements of these users rather than testing a technological blueprint on a preselected customer sample. It confronts the uncertainties of choices for industry regarding information processing, its methods and purpose. The location of the towns, the quality of sampling and the multinational nature of the project are expected to transform fast the varied needs identified into open and effective services and applications, planned to be developed and demonstrated during the succeeding stages of the project.
METASA is an innovative social-pull project initiated by four small-sized towns from Germany, France and Spain in association with a consortium composed of European human and social science researchers, service providers, operators, software and equipment manufacturers. The aim of this full-scale trial is to involve all the socio-economic actors that live and work in these towns in defining the multimedia services to be implemented so as to optimise deployment of the information society. The process consists of an in-depth analysis of information and communication needs (latent or requested, intrinsic or induced) with a good social and economic viability, in order to deploy the services, at a later stage, in optimal conditions. The project distinguishes itself from classical technology-push operations where platforms are pre-defined and implemented and only then tested upon pre-selected customers. This project offers a pragmatic approach to resolving some of the uncertainties of the future choices which lie ahead for industry : which information from whom ? to whom ? which services ? which infrastructure and equipment ?
The small size and rural situation of the towns, their geographic location and excellent socio-cultural sampling, the multinational teams involved for all the partners, allow the project to reach an excellent translation of the needs of a broad spectrum of citizens into realistic, open structured sets of services and systems within a short and efficient project.
