Kernel project on impact of transport telematics on the environment

Objectif

Road traffic accounts for an ever increasing proportion of the air pollution in European cities. ATT-based strategies designed to solve traffic problems have the potential to reduce this environmental burden. A set of appropriate tools (eg models) and methods, which is to be provided through KITE, is however essential to evaluate both actual and potential benefits.

The set of tools and methods developed in KITE will allow:
- assessment of potential air pollution impacts of ATT-based strategies prior to costly implementation;
- determination of the actual impact of limited implementations such as field trials or pilot projectS;
- estimation of air pollution impacts of such implementations if extended to wider urban areas.

TECHNICAL APPROACH

The project consists of four technical workpackages respectively for the development of interdisciplinary technical guidelines (WP1), model survey and applicability evaluation (WP2), city case studies (WP3) and dissemination of results (WP4). Project management and reporting is covered in a separate workpackage (WP5).

ACHIEVEMENTS

As part of WP1, the technical framework conditions for the project have been defined by an interdisciplinary expert group. In WP2 questionnaires on traffic, emission and dispersion models have been released. A survey on ATT functions relevant for air quality is also in progress.

CONTRIBUTION TO STANDARDISATION

The project aims to provide a set of standardised tools and methods that can be widely applied throughout Europe cities to evaluate environmental impacts of transport telematics.
