620 KW VARIABLE SPEED, YAW CONTROLLED WTG

Obiettivo

The aim of the project is to demonstrate the technical and economic viability of a 620 kW machine well suited for series production, and optimized for power generation under a broad wind speed range. This project represent the WEST effort to merge the experience from a medium size MEDIT 320 kW series production machine and the testing results of a large scale variable speed machine 2 MW GAMMA 60.

WEST 636 WTG is a variable speed machine, with power regulation through yaw control.
Two basic objectives are foreseen :
- reduction of initial and maintenance costs through the optimization of the ratio weight/energy output.
- increasing of WTG's performance (energy capture and fatigue life).
Cost competitive design has been developed persuing two main objectives :
- blades design based on the filament winding technology and aerodynamic performance optimization.
- compact drive train which integrates the main shaft, the gearbox, the drive of the two main hydraulic pumps (one for each yaw actuation system).
Technical features of the WEST 63 WTG can be broken down into basic characteristics which have been chosen from among well proven solutions and advanced concepts (variable speed and power regulation through yaw control).
