A 200 KW WIND TURBINE GENERATOR FOR DEVON

Obiettivo

A 25 m diameter, 200 KW windturbine, constructed by the Wind Energy Group (W.E.G.) has been installed in North Devon and connected to the SWEB grid in order to demonstrate that : wind turbines can be operated successfully with low maintenance and high reliability; operation of wind turbine generators can be economically viable as capital cost decreases in the future; operation and maintenance costs are at economically viable levels; availability and reliability are high and to determine other factors which affect economic viability; a wind turbine generator can be manufactured and installed at a price which will be cost competitive with diesel generated electricity and finally that a W.T.G. can be operated safely and compatibly with a public utility generating system. The estimated annual yield at the site is 600 MWh.
With the agreement signed in Spring 1984 the core team of engineers based in WEG's Greenford offices completed designs and ordering of components in early summer. Assembly took place in late autumn in the Southall Plant and shipment to site in mid December. On the Devon site assembly was completed by 16 December 1984 and the power was first fed into the South West Electricity Board Grid on 31 December 1984.
Operation since then has been satisfactory, with high availabilities being achieved at the end of the monitoring period. Performance measured on site is generally in excess of its predicted power curve and its full blade pitch system has been demonstrated to provide effective power regulation. The monitoring equipment collected data to enable engineers to validate their design codes.
The project has fulfilled its objectives, namely to show that:
- Intermediate size wind turbines can be operated with low maintenance and high reliability.
- Wind turbines can be viable economically as capital costs are reduced in the future.
- Operations and maintenance costs can be at ecomomically viable levels.
- Availability and reliability can be at high levels.
- A WTG can be manufactured and installed at prices giving electricity which would be cost competitive with diesel generated electricity.
This project has also created approximately 10 years of work within the WEG organisation and probably a similar amount for outside suppliers and consultants.
It has also demonstrated the possibility of future viable projects on suitable sites and installations are expected to be particularly viable where the wind turbines are used as fuel savers against diesel generated electricity.
WEG is now marketing the wind turbine on a worldwide basis with the aim of selling in areas where there are viable projects. Several machines have already been sold in California and Barbados. A modified version of this machine has already been commercialized. The prototype supported in this project continues to operate under the NFFO.
Wind Energy Group (W.E.G.) has constructed a 3 bladed 25 m diameter, 200 KW windturbine, based on the 20 m, 250 KW Orkney prototype and it has been installed at Ilfracombe, North Devon. The 3 variable pitch control blades of the rotor are of an epoxy-wood construction to give good fatigue life, light weight and to minimize electro-magnetic interference. An advanced NASA LS-1 aerofoil section to maximize energy capture has been used. Other innovatory features included in the design : an epicyclic gearbox which houses the main bearings carrying the rotor, for minimum weight and space requirements; a compliant transmission to absorb power peaks without the losses associated with fluid couplings; a light weight dynamically "soft" tower to minimize manufacturing cost and other innovations leading to very easy servicing of the windturbine. The cut-in windspeed is 5 m/s, the cut-out 25 m/s and the wind turbine reaches its nominal 200 KW power at 13 m/s. The estimated cost of energy unitproduced by the W.T.G. is 0.105 L while the conventional one is 0.04 L. It is hoped that the cost of the wind turbine would drop to 1/3 if mass produced giving with a pay-back time of 9 years. The estimated annual yield is 600 MWh at sites with 8 m/s annual mean wind velocity. The machine has been erected in December 1984 and to-date has been operating very successfully producing during the first 1,000 h of its operation more than 100 MWh.
For the realization W.E.G. cooperated with the mother-companies: Taylor Woodrow, British Aerospace and G.E.C. See also project WE./00005/84/UK/..
