Obiettivo
To design, construct, commission and monitor a 750 KW Howden wind turbine to be installed on Shetland Islands. It will be based on extending the technology used on the 300 KW machine of Orkney island and it will be connected to a 30 MW diesel based grid. The objective is to determine whether the wind turbine will be cost effective and suitable for isolated applications and wind farms. Estimated electricity yield 2,97 GWh.
The wind turbine was erected in June 1987 but the blades were installed in July 1988. Machine in operation since October 1988. Due to various technical problems the WT has been only 2712 hours in operation up to 31.12.91 and produced 1336 MWh. Although the availability of the machine has been about 10%, when it is in operation the load factor is more than 50%. The manufacturer of the WT withdrew from wind energy in April 1989 but continues to honour the contract. In the end of 1991 the machine was damaged by a storm ad was back in operation in October 1992. The period October-December 92 the production was 160520 MWh in 353 h of operation.
A Howden 750 KW, upwind, wind turbine will be designed, constructed and installed at Susetter Hill in the Shetland Islands. The design and erection method will be based on extending the technology used on the 300 KW Orkney machine to a much larger size. The 45 m diameter, 3 bladed wind turbine has fixed pitch blades with variable pitch tips. The blades are innovative in terms of size and their wood/epoxy construction. The 750 KW, 11 KV, 50 Hz, 1000 rpm synchronous generator will be connected to the 30 MW diesel based grid of the island. The site is characterized by extreme wind conditions and has a mean windspeed value of 10.4 m/sec. The cut-in windspeed of the wind turbine is 6 m/sec, the nominal 13 m/sec and the cut-out 25 m/sec. The estimated annual yield is 2,97 GWh assuming 90 % availability. The cost per KWh will be 8 p. The project has a payback time of about 12 years. When the machine is mass produced then the payback time will be reduced to about 6-7 years.
Remarks : estimates show that, notwithstanding the techno-financial risk due to the site characteristics and the new design, the figures concerning the annual yield as well as the cost per KWh could be better; subject to verification during the demonstration phase.
