Objective
To determine the effects of harmonising the maximum GCW for all truck within the EU at a level of 40,44 or 48 tons.
* an overview of the availability and usability of heavy vehicles per EC-member
* an overview of savings per EC-member with relation to number of vehicle movements and kilometres usage of fuel, emission of pollutants and traffic safety.
A possibility for increasing transport performance is by using vehicles and combinations with a higher maximum load so that per vehicle movement more goods can be trasported.
Heavy vehicles, that is, vehicles with a maximum (permitted) train weight including load (GVW/GCW) of 40 tons and over, have a very low (transport) cost price per transported unit. The reason for this is the high transport performance per vehicle movement. In general it can be stated that the hither the GVW/GCW of the vehicle is , the lower the energy costs (fuel costs) per transported unit will be.
It appears in national transport in The Netherlands that if the GVW/GCW is increased from 40 to 50 tons, the number of travelled kilometres in total (professional and private transport) will decrease with almost 10% (n.b. within The Netherlands 50 ton GVW/GCW is permitted, within the EC 40 tons is the limit). If we look at certain market segments in which large amounts of goods are transported with heavy vehicles (e.g. transport of sand and gravel, cement, containers) the savings percentages can exceed 30%. The aim of the project is to determine the possibilities of using these vehicles in international transport.
