Building and HVAC system SIMulator for TRAINing on energy management in buildings

Obiettivo

This project deals with a better training of operators of BEMS and has three major objectives :
1) the development of a simulator intended for buildings and heating, ventilating and air conditioning installations adapted to training. This multimedia software will be the equivalent of a flight simulator used by plane pilots.
2) the preparation, in collaboration with training centers, both technical and academic, of practical exercises and case study files using this simulator
3) the transfer of this simulator and the attached documents to BEMS manufacturers, who represent the major training centers for the use of these tools, as well as the transfer to the initial and professional training centers (universities...)

The difference in energy consumption between buildings whose installations are properly or improperly managed and run can exceed 30%. This figure can even be higher in the case of large air-conditioned buildings because of their complexity.
Nowadays, building energy management systems (called BEMS) are often used for the energy management of building installations. Getting the most out of these systems means that well-trained BEMS operators are required.
Today operators are being trained under conditions that are very far from the real conditions when running buildings and thus cannot optimise the use of BEMS in order to reduce energy consumption.
The work carried out by different research centers has led to the development of building and installation simulators that are able to reproduce in real time the behavior of a complex installation. It is therefore wise to bring such tools in the training courses of operators and the following tasks have been devised for this purpose :

T1 : DEFINITION OF A BOOK OF SPECIFICATIONS ON TRAINING COURSES USING THE SIMULATOR.
This task aims at defining :
- the type of existing training courses in which the use of a simulator would make it possible to improve the training approach,
- the type of exercises using a simulator to be developed.
The emphasis will here be placed on the training of BEMS users to give them an approach to the assessment of the impact of the way of running installations on their energy consumption. This book of specifications will be drawn up in close collaboration with the training centers to be sure that the system developed meets their needs.

T2 : DEFINITION OF DETAILED SPECIFICATIONS REGARDING THE SIMULATOR.
The definition of these detailed specifications will be based on the results of task 1. The specifications will include in particular elements regarding the following:
- the type of analyses to be undertaken with the simulator;
- the actions users are to be able to take;
- the form in which the results are to be listed depending on the type of approach aimed at;
- the simulator's cost objectives.

T3 : DEVELOPMENT OF THE SIMULATOR.
This task consists in specifying the modifications to be added to the research simulators in order for them to be used by training centers with their own data processing equipment. The software developed will derive from software already used in the research field. The work will mainly concern the improvement of the user interface, and the basic design of models due to be used by trainers so as to prepare exercises adapted to their needs.

T4 : PREPARATION OF A SERIES OF STUDY CASES USING THE SIMULATOR.
The work will lie in defining a series of case studies (practical exercises) which will be used within the framework of training courses. Both the drafting of study files (papers intended for the trainer and his students) and the configuration of the simulator will be done.

T5 : DISSEMINATION OF THE RESULTS.
The dissemination of the results will be carried out in partnership with:
- the BEMS manufacturers' training centers,
- the initial training centers,
- the professional training centers.

This partnership will take place within the framework of the project drawn up with training centers in France and in Holland. Two other types of dissemination actions will be conducted:
- issuing of publications in scientific journals in France and in Holland,
- information on the results of the project on intermediary partners in other European countries.
At the end of the project, we will select among the main European countries, centres interested in disseminating the simulator.

EXPECTED RESULTS
The main results of the project will be the following:
- a simulator and case study files intended for training centers,
- publications on the capacity of such simulators for improving the energy management and the training of users.
