Towards the next generation of sustainable waterborne transport systems
Shifting cargo transport from roads and railways to coastal shipping and inland waterways is key to reducing road congestion and pollution. However, while road transport in intra-EU tonnes-kilometres has increased, the share of short sea shipping and inland shipping has dropped. The EU-funded AEGIS project will develop a new waterborne transport system for Europe. This requires new types of services and business models, and better logistics systems. Specifically, the project will use new innovations from the field of connected and automated transport, including smaller and flexible vessel types, automated cargo handling, autonomous ships, new and standardised cargo units and new digital technologies to regain the position waterborne routes traditionally had in cargo transport.
