Polarization sensitive photodetection by straining moiré van der Waals superlattices

Project description

Combining twistronics and straintronics to engineer photodetectors with tuneable properties

The recent discovery of twistronics has opened up exciting possibilities in materials science. This technology involves stacking 2D materials at specific angles to create unique patterns (moiré patterns) that change how the material behaves. When combined with straintronics, which uses mechanical strain to tune material behaviour, these technologies offer promise for creating highly functional optoelectronic devices. With the support of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the PHOTOMOIRE project will study these two fields by investigating various 2D material combinations and straining methods. Using advanced microscopy techniques, researchers will attempt to visualise how moiré patterns respond to strain. The ultimate goal is to engineer innovative photodetectors with strain-tuneable polarisation, to create custom, efficient optoelectronic technologies.

Objective

The stacking of two dimensional materials with control of the relative twist angle led to the formation of long-range ordering structural modulation of the atomic lattices with the generation of moiré potentials. Twistronics is a blooming and promising new avenue to achieve optoelectronic devices with extra functionalities offering plenty of opportunities that can be combined with the well-established field of straintronics. In this project, a number of layered materials combinations and straining methodologies will be investigated by in situ Atomic Force Microscopy-based methods such as Piezoresponse Force Microscopy, Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy and Tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy to visualize the moiré domains under strain. Finally, the project endeavors to engineer photodetectors with strain-tunable polarization using marginally twisted strained van der Waals heterostructures.
