D-MIMO Multi-band Imaging for 6G Framework

Project description

It is possible to see with 6G

As cities grow smarter and devices more connected, the demand for wireless systems that can both communicate and ‘see’ their surroundings is rising. Today’s networks fall short when it comes to integrating high-resolution imaging with fast, reliable data transfer. Supported by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the MIDAS-6G project tackles this gap by embedding imaging directly into future 6G infrastructure. Using a multiband distributed MIMO (D-MIMO) system, the project boosts image quality. MIDAS-6G explores how communication and imaging can work hand in hand, drawing on advances in signal processing and electromagnetic theory. The result is a new wave of technologies with the potential to enhance safety, navigation, and digital services in dense urban environments.

Objective

The MIDAS-6G project aims to seamlessly integrate high-resolution imaging capabilities into the 6G infrastructure using a pioneering multiband distributed multiple input multiple output (D-MIMO) system. This innovative application enhances imaging resolution via large physical and frequency apertures without compromising communication functionalities, marking one of the first such integrations in the field. Structured around three key objectives, optimizing the D-MIMO system for high-resolution imaging capabilities, developing imaging techniques tailored for the D-MIMO 6G infrastructure, and investigating the synergies and trade-offs within an Integrated Communication and Imaging (ICAI) framework, the project is methodically aligned with distinct work packages. This alignment ensures a systematic approach from the initial system design, which utilizes heuristic and convex optimization methods, to the advanced development of imaging techniques using nonlinear compressed sensing and Bayesian methods, culminating in the robust implementation of ICAI. Interdisciplinary expertise from fields such as electromagnetic theory, compressed sensing, and wireless communications is leveraged to enhance the system's capabilities, creating a dynamic collaborative environment that drives technological innovation. Performance is rigorously evaluated through detailed simulations, with metrics such as resolution, signal-to-noise ratio, signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio, and bit error rate serving as indicators of success. The anticipated outcomes include the development of novel, scalable imaging technologies well-positioned for dissemination across academic and industrial sectors, and enhancing urban safety and autonomous navigation. By integrating high-resolution imaging solutions with cutting-edge 6G technology, the MIDAS-6G project is set to transform technological standards, delivering significant benefits across various sectors.
