A publication providing a synopses of research projects, funded within the EU's RTD programme in the field of agriculture and fisheries (FAIR), has recently been published by the European Commission, DG XII. The projects covered relate specifically to food and nutritional research and in particular Area 3 of the FAIR work programme which focused on generic science and advanced technologies for nutritious foods. Information on the objectives, expected results and applications of each project are provided in the publication, as well as the total funding committed and the project duration. Contact details for each project coordinator and the various partners involved in the research are also provided. Examples of the projects, which are described within the following sections, include: - Consumer nutrition and well-being: . Quality policy and consumer behaviour; . Bioethical aspects of biotechnology in the agrofood sector; . Adverse reactions to food; - New and optimised food materials and nutritious food products: . Nutrient enhancement of diet in Europe; . Improved quality and shelf life of vegetables; . Engineering shatter resistance into oilseed rape; - Advanced and optimised technologies and processes: . Harmonisation of safety criteria for minimally processed foods; . Recycling of plastic and paper for food packaging; . Biodegradable nanocomposite food packaging; - Generic food science: . Control of sulphur flavours in food; . Processing of biopolymer mixtures for zero and low-fat foods; . A network for the supply of BSE tissues and fluids for European collaborative research.
