Regional bioeconomy clusters – workshop to set out recommendations for way forward

Some countries and regions are less active in the bioeconomy than others.

This is often more to do with how the economy is organised than with actual resources available. Bioeconomy and bio-based clusters could be a way to help such regions develop the sector in the future. This was the central theme of a workshop entitled "Advance the creation of regional bioeconomy clusters in Europe" held on 14 March 2019 in Brussels, a joint initiative by the Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU) and the SCAR Bioeconomy Strategic Working Group (SCAR BSW). The event looked at the key drivers for cluster development in the bioeconomy and the role that SMEs could play. Specifically the agenda featured cluster set-up, funding, cluster management, support and alignment and general implementation, setting out a series of recommendations for each topic. Covering the event was Myrna van Leeuwen of Wageningen University, the coordinating organisation of the BioMonitor project.
