Participation of Argentinian experts and organizations in the Fifth Euratom Framework Programme is fully open on a self-financing basis subsequent to the entry into force on 29 October 1997 of the Agreement for co-operation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy between the European Community (Euratom) and Argentina. The objective of the agreement is to develop cooperation between the European Community and Argentina in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy on the basis of mutual benefit, reciprocity, and respect for regulatory and legal provisions as regards effective protection and equitable sharing of intellectual property. Cooperation may include the following fields: - Reactor safety research; - Nuclear waste management and disposal; - Radiation protection; - Decommissioning of nuclear installations; - Controlled thermonuclear fusion; - Research into nuclear applications in the fields of agriculture, medicine and industry; - Nuclear safeguards; - Research into interaction between nuclear energy and the environment; - Other areas of mutual interest jointly agreed upon by the parties. Cooperation will take the form of participation in joint projects, exchanges of information, training of scientists through mobility, exchanges of materials and equipment in the context of experiments, and joint participation in studies and activities. Costs resulting from cooperation activities shall be borne by the party that incurs them, unless otherwise specifically agreed by the parties. Regular joint Committee meetings review activities under the Agreement. The first such meeting took place in Brussels in October 1997 and the second was held in Buenos Aires in December 1998.
