Monitoring the positive and the negative aspects of technological innovation and the effects of the new economy is a vital and worthy cause, according to the Swedish secretary of state for industry, employment and communications, Anna Ekstrom. She made the comments during a visit to the research body, the European foundation for the improvement of living and working conditions, on 6 June. One of the foundation's major initiatives is the European monitoring centre on change (EMCC), which was established following calls from the European Commission, the French and the Swedish presidencies of the European Union for more information on the area of industrial change, with regard to 'economic, financial, technological and territorial and social developments in the European Union'. Ms Ekstrom, apart from endorsing the EMCC from the Swedish presidency's point of view, also welcomed the news that the Belgian presidency will be holding a conference in Brussels for the stakeholders in the EMCC. Plans for further development of the EMCC's activities include the establishment of a major web-based portal (EMCC portal, which will give access to relevant websites and databases, as well as analyses of major changes in the area.sk (
