The Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Sofia is recognised for its achievements in materials science. Previous work determined that the field of advanced functional materials has the highest potential for development given the Faculty's research quality and capability. To further the study of advanced functional materials, the EU-funded BEYONDEVEREST (Development of the research potential of the Faculty of Chemistry, Sofia University, in the area of advanced functional materials for successful participation in world-class research at EU level) project aimed to enhance research potential through mobility schemes, recruitment, modernisation of facilities and various events. The focus was on functional materials for clean energy, environmental protection, optics and optoelectronics, as well as materials with pharmaceutical and medical applications. BEYONDEVEREST strengthened the Faculty's research excellence through transfer of know-how and experience. This was accomplished with short-term mobility schemes, dissemination activities such as lectures, conference and workshops presentations, and new joint proposal submissions. It also fostered strategic partnerships with internationally renowned European research institutions. Four experienced researchers were recruited by the Faculty. Cooperation with industry was intensified and the Faculty's strategy for innovation and commercialisation of scientific results was developed. In order to conduct first-rate cutting-edge research at laboratory facilities, new equipment was brought in, namely nuclear magnetic resonance apparatus, a transmission electron microscope and catalytic tools. The participation of Faculty researchers in world-class research activities at EU level was promoted. Publication activity greatly increased with respect to the number of peer-reviewed publications and the level of influence and impact of targeted journals. BEYONDEVEREST helped to further enhance the Faculty's position globally as a centre for scientific and research excellence and know-how in functional materials.
