Turf grass production involves growing a solid stand of grass with uniform density and texture that is harvested along with the roots and a thin layer of topsoil. Over the years, the demand for turf grass is increasing but, at the same time, producers are facing the spiralling costs of irrigation water, fertilisers and pesticides required to keep the grass healthy. With EU funding, SODSAT (Remote precision management of turf grass sod production by means of artificial intelligence and satellite imaging) researchers hoped to increase the competitiveness of Europe's turf grass production. They developed an innovative web-based monitoring system to manage sod farms remotely. SODSAT technology combines satellite imaging with on-site sensing. By translating multi-spectral satellite images into agronomical information, the new expert system provides terrain-specific recommendations for farmers. In addition, on-field sensing with portable devices contribute data on water levels, temperatures and wind speed to increase the yield of turf grass production. Researchers developed a working prototype based on specifications and case studies conducted during SODSAT. Technical parameters informed by these studies promise to grow healthier turf grass using reduced water and chemical inputs while controlling and preventing disease. Apart from ensuring a more profitable sod farm, the SODSAT system will also aid in minimising the environmental footprint of turf grass production by reducing the use of water and agricultural chemicals.
