Innovations for more resilient manufacturing organisations to better cope with risks, disruptions and competition
With EU funding, the REMPLANET (Resilient multi-plant networks) project developed methods, guidelines and tools for implementation of a resilient multi-plant network model in non-hierarchical manufacturing networks that are characterised by non-centralised decision-making. The solutions allow multi-plant networks to adapt rapidly and appropriately to very complex and ever-changing scenarios. This was achieved by understanding the customers’ wishes. It was also accomplished by developing and nurturing the specific supply networks, thus allowing to effectively and efficiently deliver value to customers through an adequate and customised bundle of physical products and services. Specifically, project partners devised an idea management process (IMP) that links customers to mass customisation companies. The IMP targets the integration of customer ideas and innovations into the new product development process of a company. They designed a mass customisation knowledge network, an online portal where mass customisation stakeholders can collaborate. Researchers created an operational REMPLANET model (ORM). It represents and integrates the main concepts and relationships for consideration in the strategic design of supply networks when managing demands of personalised products. The ORM includes a conceptual model, toolbox and guidelines to respond to customised market demands at the lowest possible cost and time. They produced a workbook that supports manufacturing companies in establishing which customisation scenario they are operating in using the diagnostic tool and model answers. The REMPLANET team set up a simulation and optimisation decision-support system to redesign and innovate multi-plant network architectural and managerial design by conducting realistic what-if simulations/optimisations. It also established an ICT platform that provides a web-based environment where collaborative networks may be created and deployed onto a truly operational environment. REMPLANET outcomes will enable manufacturing enterprise networks to be more competitive in an ever-increasing globalised economy via shorter times for innovation, decision-making and manufacturing processes. Society in general should benefit from having more efficient and effective manufacturing enterprises that reduce time and resource waste.
