AVICENNE: New projects selected
A total of 15 new projects were selected following a call for proposals made under the AVINCENNE initiative on scientific and technical cooperation with Maghreb and the countries of the Mediterranean Basin (published in Official Journal No C 158 of 12.6.1993). Launched in 1992, AVICENNE aims to develop cooperation in research and development between the EU and these countries via multilateral cooperation on targeted research themes which are of mutual interest and have a regional impact on the Mediterranean Basin. To date, the initiative has focused on two priority areas: the protection of the environment (including the management of water resources and agricultural problems); and medicine and biology applied to health care. The 1993 call involved: - Health systems research: Identification, evaluation and validation of strategies for health policy and allocation of health care; identification of the factors determining the participation of individuals and communities; - Research on diarrhoeal diseases, molecular biology and strategies for prevention and treatment, with particular attention paid to Amoebiasis; - Water: Hydrologic research on the Mediterranean Basin, namely resource characterization, including water recycling, and the potential for improved management of water resources. The 15 funded projects were chosen for their scientific and technical excellence, their degree of innovation, and the expertise and relevance of the partnership proposed in terms of the project to be undertaken. Each project, as a general rule, includes at least two independent partners in different Mediterranean third countries plus at least one partner established in a EU Member State. For example, one research project brings together partners from Turkey, Greece and Israel, and in another case, partners from France, Israel, Egypt and the Occupied Territories. Since the 1992 launch of AVICENNE, 33 proposals have received EU funding (18 in 1992, 15 in 1993) with an overall financial support of ECU 10.3 million. The call was open to all persons, organizations and research institutes in the Member States of the European Union and in the third countries concerned: Algeria, Cyprus, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Malta, the Occupied Territories, Syria, Turkey and Tunisia.
