'Hands off our science teachers,' say developing countries
Developing countries are feeling the strain of brain drain and have called on richer countries, particularly the UK, to stop poaching their science teachers. The UK now recruits one in seven teachers from abroad, with many of these specialised in science subjects or mathematics. Jamaica's Education Minister, Maxine Henry Wilson, is therefore calling for the implementation of a code of practice that would prevent countries within the Commonwealth from 'plundering' others' teachers. Many teachers from developing countries who apply for jobs abroad have either a Masters degree or a PhD, according to recruiting agencies. Many believe that this is having a damaging effect on the education plans of developing countries.
