Medicine in Europe: a guide to funding for medical, dental and veterinary research workers
The European Commission, DG XIII, has published a guide to European Union funding in the health sector entitled "Medicine in Europe: a guide to funding for medical, dental and veterinary research workers". The guide aims to provide those involved in the health sector with an overview of what the European Union research programmes can offer them, and how to go about taking part. In the specific area of health, the EU has as yet no central policy. There is a Biomedical Health research programme, which is described in some detail in the present guide, and other research programmes, which are of interest to health research workers, which are outlined. Topics covered by the guide include: - A general background to EU funding, the structure of the EU institutions, sources of information and the Community's Framework Programmes for research and technological development (RTD); - A detailed look at the Community's specific RTD programmes in the field of biomedicine and health (BIOMED 2), in the field of biotechnology (BIOTECH 2), and for the training and mobility of researchers (TMR); - An overview of additional funding possibilities under other Community RTD programmes, including programmes in the areas of: . Telematics Applications; . Standards, Measurements and Testing (SMT); . Industrial Materials and Technologies (BRITE/EURAM); . Environment and Climate; . Agriculture and Fisheries (FAIR); . Nuclear Fission Safety (NFS); . Targeted Socio-Economic Research (TSER); . Cooperation with third countries and international organizations (INCO); . Dissemination and exploitation of results (INNOVATION); - A look at funding possibilities in the area of education and training (LEONARDO DA VINCI and SOCRATES) and other possible areas of interest, including non-Framework funding programmes (PHARE, TACIS and TEMPUS) and the structural and development funds.
