The European Commission has decided to allocate aid of ECU 7 million, of which ECU 4 million will come from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and ECU 3 million from the European Social Fund (ESF), to help reduce economic difficulties and social exclusion in certain areas of the town of Marseille (France). The aid in question is being allocated under the URBAN Community Initiative and will be complemented by a grant of ECU 11 million from the national authorities. The investment will allow the creation or safeguard of some 500 jobs, professional reinsertion for 500 posts and some 200 jobs in professional training activities. Four priority areas have been identified: - Economic development and employment; - Social development and improvement of living conditions, particularly with regard to the fight against drug dependency, the prevention of delinquency and aid in the area of child welfare; - Urban regeneration; - Exchanges of experience and know-how with other European towns confronted by the same problems.
