Mrs. Edith Cresson, European Commissioner responsible for research, education and training, has announced that the Commission will shortly propose a European initiative to exploit the opportunities offered by the Information Society for education and training. Mrs. Cresson announced her plans at the opening of CeBIT'96, the major international IT exhibition held in Hannover, Germany, on 13 March 1996. The Commissioner noted that the EU needs to take resolute and coordinated measures to help national education systems use and master the new tools offered by the Information Society. The initiative to be proposed by the Commissioner is likely to be similar to the US initiative "America's technology literacy challenge", and would fall within the framework of the European Year of Lifelong Learning. The initiative will also be in line with the objectives set out in the White Paper "Teaching and learning: Towards the learning society", approved by the Commission on 30 November 1995.
