SOCRATES education action programme - 1997 projects

The European Commission, DG XXII, has launched the 1997 call for proposals for projects in the SOCRATES Community action programme in the field of education. The SOCRATES programme, which is open to all EU Member States and Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, provides for the promotion of cooperation in six educational fields: - Higher education (ERASMUS): . Action 1: grants with a view to developing the European dimension within universities; .Action 2: student grants; - School education (COMENIUS): . Action 1: school partnerships/European educational projects; . Action 2: education of migrant workers' children, workers with a mobile profession, travellers and Gypsies, inter-cultural education; . Action 3: continuous education of teachers and other teaching personnel; - Promotion of language teaching (LINGUA): . Action A: European cooperation programmes for language-teacher training (ECP); . Action B: continuous education activities in the foreign language teaching field; . Action C: assistantships for future foreign language teachers; . Action D: development of tools for language teaching, learning and assessment of language skills; . Action E: joint educational projects for language learning (JEP); - Promotion of open and distance learning (EOD); - Adult education; - Exchange of information and experience on education systems and policies: . 1. Issues of common interest concerning education policy; . 2. European Education Information Network (EURYDICE); . 3. Visit schedule for decision-makers regarding education (ARION); . 4. Network of national academic recognition information centres (NARIC). In addition to these six sectors, grants are available for complementary measures, including grants for the European activities of associations in the field of education, and preparatory visits, with a view to establishing foundations for projects under various parts of the programme. Introduction and selection procedures for applications for SOCRATES support vary considerably depending on whether the action concerned is managed on a central level by the Commission or on a more decentralized level by the national agencies designated by participating countries. All necessary details concerning application procedures, deadlines and selection criteria for projects and activities submitted during the calendar year 1997 are in the Applicants' Guide 1997, which has just been published.
