The European Commission, DG XIII, has published a report entitled "The road to the Information Society - New technologies for education and training". The report presents updated contributions to the seminar on "Training in the Information Society", held in Brussels (6-7 December 1994) as a follow-up to the Bangemann Report on the Information Society and as a contribution to the Action Plan "Europe's way to the Information Society". The seminar was attended by a wide range of interested parties, from the fields of education and training, media and information industries, electronics and telecommunications manufacturers and policy-makers. The aim of the seminar was to survey new applications of information and communications technologies for education and vocational training, and to establish a new perspective on learning in the 21st century. The seminar was particularly concerned with the importance of effective low-cost industrial and vocational training, given budgetary constraints in both public and private sectors. Subject areas covered by the report include: - Developments in the Information Society; - Views of the US government; - Applications of the Information Highway; - Visions of education and training in the future; - Actions for universities; - Actions for industry; - Pedagogical issues.
