Problem-solving methodology for businesses

A scientific method for handling business and industry problems that involves a framework methodology and organisational structure has been developed.

The method, Six Sigma was originally developed in 1987 at Motorola and was quite successful in the USA with American Express, Boeing, Citybank, Dow, Ford and General Electric. These multinationals were able to obtain billions of dollars in savings as a result. Since then, companies such as Nokia and Philips have implemented the approach in Europe. The projects for Six Sigma are handled by middle management trained in problem solving through statistical techniques from what is known as a Black Belt training. The training constitutes four modules and it runs for four days over a four-month period. The topic of focus efficient problem solving methodology was derived from a stepwise approach known as DMAIC (Defense, Measure, Analyse, Improve and Control). The workshop emphasises data by focusing on financial results and provides a summary of Six Sigma's program and philosophy. It teaches both the history and the main concepts of the program such as the strategies it uses to arrive at process improvements. The Six Sigma program is suitable for managers, executives, engineers and senior staff. Those instructing the course modules consultants experienced in international industry and trained in statistical science.
